What I learned upon adopting a pit bull cross was WHY they are favored as fighting dogs. They are super intelligent. The thing that intelligence brings as much as understanding is a greater quality to fear. You understand enough to be REALLY afraid. When you are afraid you fight harder. It was a terrible insight.
She is perhaps the most intelligent dog I have ever had. She is the first dog I have ever had who recognized and sometimes watches an airplane fly by. Her intellect can make her more fearful too. For example, she recognizes the veterinarian’s office and she is afraid.
Going along with that intellect is real bravery too. She is the first dog I have had who runs out into the backyard to bark at the threatening thunder. I have had dogs be afraid and I have had dogs ignore it. I have had small dogs which barked from within the house, but to run out into the yard and bark. It was as if she was telling whatever big monster was stomping around in the dark better not come on over here. It was a first.
I recall she startled a large insect in some weeds. She jumped back, afraid. The insect continued to make a lot of noise due to the dry leaves and such. She stood there and started pawing the grass and snorting like a bull. She was ready to take on whatever came out of the weeds.
She did not run. She also showed me a good reason they might be referred to as bull dogs. She sure looked like a bull pawing the ground and snorting at the perceived monster in the weeds.
In any case, pit bulls are so intelligent they can understand they are fighting for their lives. Pitties understand the brutal logic of the ring. Coupled with their clear understanding of what losing means, they are pretty vicious I imagine. The true quality of their fear joined with unusual bravery, well it is no wonder they are favored by dog fighters.
It should mean they are favored by us too. They are good watchdogs. They need love and attention because they are so intelligent. They fight so hard because they are afraid.
Maggie, my lovely pit beagle. I just had to write a little about her.
