Right as the Vietnam War ended a flood of Hmong & Vietnamese hit my elementary school. It was jarring for everyone. It was very mixed race school and Hmong were bottom of hierarchy. Even Vietnamese seemed to look down on Hmong. As time went by less and less people identified as Hmong and rather referred to themselves as Vietnamese. By the time the 21st century it was like all the Hmong had left and there were only Vietnamese. I am a Caucasian so my ability to distinguish Hmong from Vietnamese is limited BUT I do feel like there are some visual cues I remember from being a kid at State Street Elementary in the mid-seventies. There have been a number of times lately where someone looked Hmong self-identified as Vietnamese. Am I just a confused old white person or have Hmong “gone stealth” and just tell “outsiders” they are Vietnamese to make it easier?
