I have a couple of comments on this nicely articulated and researched story on something dog owners “know” but are not sure we understand.

1. When my children were young and had nightmares and were afraid, the dog was a GREAT comfort. I told them — “If” there are monsters, ghosts and demons the dog will KNOW, the dog will “detect these things” AND the dog will fight for you.
2. I had learned as an adult when I didn’t have a dog next to my bed for a number of years I didn’t sleep soundly. I could have a gun under my pillow and still someone sneaks up on me. Not happening with a dog next to me and then the dog will fight while you get the gun. A good dog & you don’t even need a gun.
