I was taught it was about States' Rights but it seemed to be very much about slavery. After all Lincoln suffers everything to gain this victory. He gives everything to defeat the South. If the Civil War is about slavery then Lincoln champions the side who wish to end it. There is an account of the young Lincoln witnessing a slave market while onna business trip for his father in New Orleans. He was apparently quite affected by the experience. If Lincoln is a pragmatist who deeply desires to end slavery doesn’t he have to lie in these moments from which you have extracted your quotes? Judge me by my actions not by my words is all any man asks
