I am from Socal, but spent a good chunk of my young adulthood living in NorCal. One thing which surprised me given the healthy lifestyle north compared to south was the prevalence of cancer. Norcal has a dirty secret and it is cancer clusters all over the northern/central part of state. I eventually came to the conclusion the larger number of swimmable lakes, ponds and rivers in NorCal was at least part of the cause. It gets hot in the summer and I think taking a “dip" could be deadly. Dunno, moved back south to Babylon but I have never forgotten the cancer map I saw in the early 90s. It made me think of Silent Spring
